Why Do I Need To Have A Tooth or Wisdom Teeth Extracted?
There are two types of extractions: Simple extractions are performed when the majority of the tooth above the gum line is intact allowing the tooth to be extracted in one piece. If the tooth above the gum line is severely decayed, if it is fractured, or when the damage to the tooth extends below the gum line, a surgical extraction may be necessary.
SW Calgary Wisdom Teeth Extraction
The wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and when they try to erupt into the mouth sometimes there not enough room for them. When wisdom teeth try to erupt into a space that is too small, they can cause crowding among the surrounding teeth. When there is no space left for the wisdom teeth, they remain trapped in the gum or impacted under the gum line. Impacted wisdom teeth can become very painful and may cause infection in the gum tissue. At Kingsland Family Dental Care, we typically recommend extracting impacted wisdom teeth between the ages of 17 to 25.
What To Expect After Tooth Extractions
Every case is different, and after the tooth is removed your dentist will review with you what to expect. In general, a small amount of discomfort is normal right when the freezing comes out, and some patients will take ibuprofen or acetaminophen at that time. Bleeding or swelling is usually minimal, but again, your dentist can tell you what to expect with your case.
Replacing Missing Teeth
Some teeth that require extraction are important for both the function of your teeth and your facial aesthetics. For example, the first molar tooth is very important for chewing; so not replacing it could result in tooth drift and an unbalanced bite. However, some other teeth, such as wisdom teeth, are rarely replaced. To ensure no surprises down the road, this is an issue that is addressed prior to tooth removal.
